Torn between two women, Fidelia and Tigrana, Edgar decides to enlist in the army, where he falls in battle. Believed dead, the two women tear each other apart: Fidelia defends his memory, Tigrana presses him down... But are we really sure that Edgar is dead ?...
Taken from Musset's dramatic poem The Cup and the Lips (1832), the libretto of Puccini's second opera is almost reminiscent of Wagner's Tannhäuser: it shows us a hero torn between two images of femininity, the tender and benevolent Fidelia on the one hand, and the passionate Tigrana on the other. Like Tannhäuser, Edgar flees from both before returning, disguised as a monk, to beg forgiveness. It took Puccini four long years to perfect this work, which deserves much better than the relative oblivion in which it has been held since the failure of its premiere. The composer is already fully himself in this work, with his exceptional gift for musical emotion.
Nicola Raab and Giuliano Carella invite us to rediscover the original four-act version, later reduced to three acts by Puccini. For this stage premiere of the work in France, Opéra de Nice has assembled a first-rate cast, including Stefano La Colla's dazzling Edgar, Ekaterina Bakanova and Valentine Boi as Fidelia and Tigrana...
