Participatory opera - New Nice Côte d’Azur Opera production

Music and text by Howard Moody. Translation into French by Benoit De Leersnyder. Premièred at the Brussels Théâtre Royal de La Monnaie on 14 February 2014.

From age 6 and up

A famous figure from Ancient Persian legends, Sindbad the sailor inspired the British composer Howard Moody to create an absolutely contemporary opera.

Sindbad the sailor returns to his home-town of Baghdad, after a long journey, and discovers that the whole city has been bombed. Before all these orphaned children who walk the streets, it is a new type of journey that he must undertake with them, seeking to find a better future for them in which peace will win over disputes and war.

Directed by one of the venue's regulars, Benoît Bénichou, and conducted by composer Howard Moody himself, this participatory work will offer young operatic artists from the CFA, as well as students from local Nice schools, the chance to take their first steps on the stage of the Opera. A performance that is simultaneously civic-minded, unifying and human, where the meaning of collective work comes to accompany the moral of this story: that war can strike anywhere, at any moment. Luckily, solidarity and mutual aid are more than just empty words …

Show in French with surtitles in French and English.
